Debate on children’s heart surgery at Glenfield

I managed to secure a debate on the Government’s review of child heart surgery and the future of Glenfield Hospital’s Congenital Heart Centre. The debate was in Westminster Hall on Wednesday 7th July. You can read the Hansard report of the debate here or watch it on Parliament TV here (the debate starts at 4.30pm and last for 30 minutes).
Please help the campaign to keep children’s heart services at Glenfield by joining the Facebook group.

PMQ on Glenfield’s children’s heart surgery unit

This week I asked my first Prime Minister’s Question about the future of the paediatric cardiac unit at Glenfield Hospital. The unit provides outstanding care, not only in terms of the quality of surgery but also the excellent nursing, after care and facilities and support for parents.
The Government is currently reviewing the future of children’s heart surgery in England to make sure every child gets the best possible treatment. I asked the Prime Minister to ensure all aspects of care are fully considered by the review and to ...

Tory-Liberal Budget will hit poorest hardest

Last week was my first Budget as Leicester West’s MP. The measures George Osborne announced will affect the lives of people in Leicester West for years to come, and determine the economic and political direction of the country.
The Tory-Liberal Government says its Budget was unavoidable, will boost growth and jobs, and is fair. None of these claims stand up to scrutiny.

Liz’s maiden speech, Thursday 10 June

I welcome you to your new position, Mr Deputy Speaker, and I thank you for giving me the opportunity to make my maiden speech during this important debate on poverty.
It is a great honour to serve as the Member of Parliament for Leicester West. My constituency has a proud history, as part of an open and diverse city that has welcomed people, commerce and ideas. In Roman times, Fosse Way, which still runs through Leicester West, was one of the main routes across Britain. This road helped to bring trade ...

Labour Leadership

Today I nominated David Miliband to be Leader of the Labour party. Labour is lucky to have some outstanding candidates – people with real talent, commitment and passion – putting themselves forward for this election. I’ve talked to, read about and listened to the candidates before making my decision. I want someone who has got the vision, values and experience to lead us through Opposition and back into Government, and I think David is the person to do it.
David came to Leicester earlier this week, to meet young people ...
