On Friday, I welcomed his Royal Highness, Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent to Leicester as we showcased the brilliant work of De Montfort University’s Square Mile project. The project uses DMU’s talents and resources to help improve life for local residents in Fosse, Woodgate and Newfoundpool.

The highlight of the visit for me was the dance performance put on by school children as part of the Movin2gether project. This project teaches degree level dance to a much younger audience and on completion participants receive an arts award worth 35 UCAS points. His Royal Highness was also shown an IT Project that offers local residents free training in areas such as social media. Finally, we discussed the brilliant work that’s been done on the Rik Basra Stem Cell Donation drive,  which has raised awareness of the Anthony Nolan Trust as well as increasing the number of registered stem cell donors.

I’m really proud of Leicester so it was  great to show off the fantastic work that’s being done here.

Fosse Primary School, which is in the heart of my constituency, was recently awarded with the Leicester City anti-bullying award for the excellent work they’ve done to stamp out bullying.

It was a real privilege to present this award at the school assembly and I was particularly pleased to meet the young “anti-bullying ambassadors”. These are students who offer support to other children and make sure everyone feels welcome and involved at the school.
