Liz pledges to raise awareness of dementia

Alzheimer's Society pledge 3 Sep 2013On 10th September I attended an Alzheimer’s Society event in Parliament where I joined other MPs in pledging to take action to help raise awareness of dementia in my constituency.

It is estimated that there are as many as 1600 people living in Leicester who suffer from dementia, but haven’t been diagnosed. This means almost one in two people in our city who have dementia don’t realize they do, and therefore don’t get the right care and support.

One in three people over 65 will develop dementia at some point in their lives, so it’s an issue that we can no longer afford to ignore. I will continue to work with the NHS locally to make sure we tackle the stigma attached to the condition, and make sure people in Leicester come forward for help when they need it.
